Education
We believe: That educational opportunities and issues must be given a high priority in the state Democratic Party; That every child in this state should have access to early childhood educational experiences that are directly tied to classroom learning and relevant classroom experiences that effectively prepare them to meet life’s challenges.
That school curricula should be revamped to better prepare students to gain employment within “high tech” industries and emerging markets within Connecticut and global economies.Economic Development
We believe: That economic development should be connected to complementary human resource development programs; That a major goal should be the creation of jobs and economic opportunities for city residents. We therefore strongly support the provision of tax and “good will: incentives for existing and new businesses to hire Black residents into desirable long-term jobs. We also support the introduction of
special training program in the high schools, colleges, the corporate sector, and social service agencies to prepare students for gainful employment.Health
We believe it is in the best interest of the state that all Connecticut citizens have access to
high quality health care and that it is essential that regressive barriers to access be removed immediately. We also believe that more promising health care programs should be fully supported. We strongly urge the state to review the general efficacy of the managed care process; and assess the specific impact of this process on Black families. We also support funding action programs that address the specific health concerns that disproportionately affect Black American communities (i.e., infant mortality, hypertension, breast cancer, HIV, etc.). We especially support increased funding for the expansion of the HUSKY program, which covers medical expenses for uninsured children.
